Knocking on Heavens Door
Originally for the 1973 western film "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid", "Knocking on Heavens Door" has become a modern day classic. With a very simple chord structure (G D Am, followed by G D C) it proves that songs do not have to be musically complex to resonate with their audience. Originally written and performed by Bob Dylan, the song has been covered by numerous artists, including Eric Clapton, Guns N' Roses, and most recently by Avril Lavigne.
How to play 'Knocking On Heavens Door' on the piano or guitar
'Knocking on Heavens Door' is a good song to learn as a beginner on the guitar due to the relatively easy chords. The are no ackward barre chords, and the four chords that are used (G, D Am and C) can be played with three fingers. For the keyboard student, only the D major needs to be watched (with the one black key on F#). All the other notes fall neatly on white keys. If you play the D chord in the first inversion (F#-A-D) then the switch from the G to the D chord is much easier. Remember to still play a 'D' note in the left hand. Play the first two chords (G and D) twice on the beat, and the third chord (Am) four times. Repeat this idea for the second line (e.g. G G D D C C C C).
