Easy Chords

Hi and welcome to easy chords! Here you're going to be seeing pretty much everything you need to know about playing chords on the guitar or piano. It's illustrated throughout, and completely free! From basic to advanced, simple major chords to the more unusual ones like Ebm, you'll find them all here!

Basic Chords for the piano
On this home page, you'll find links down the right-hand side to all the basic major and minor chords on the piano. The videos explain how the chords are played, and also show suitable fingering for each chord.

TOP TIP

If you're fairly new to the instrument, I suggest you try learning C, F, G and Am (all chords with just white keys) to begin with, and then have a go at the theme tune to the titanic film ("My Heart Will Go On") in the songs section. Once you've got the idea of this, you could then try out "Candle in the Wind". This song also contains C, F and G, and adds a new chord - Bb major. This contains one black key- a little more tricky!

Basic Chords for the guitar

The next section - easy guitar chords - works through the chords in a similiar fashion, this time with the guitarist in mind. There's also some suggested songs to try out, and an explanation of guitar symbols and fingering. Happy learning!

Some songs you can learn at this site:

Snow Patrol's epic song "Light Up, Light Up" (Run) Ease of playing rating: 3/10
Beginner - there's just four chords in this song, and for the keyboard player, they're all white key chords.

Christina Aguilara's magical ballad "Beautiful" Ease of playing rating: 8/10
Advanced: requires knowledge of more uncommon chords using more black keys. Also a difficult song to play on the guitar (several barre chords involved)

Coldplay and "The Scientist" ("Nobody Said It Was Easy") Ease of playing rating: 4/10
Beginner/intermediate - you'll need to know some slightly more difficult chords for this song

Robbie Williams classic song "Angels" Ease of playing rating: 6/10
Intermediate - you'll need to know about six chords to play this song

Chord Theory

The chord theory section of the site is all about how chords are put together. It's good to be able to learn different chord shapes from memory, but it's even better if you understand how the chord is actually constructed. For example, say you know how to play Dm7, but what about G#m7? These pages will teach you how put a minor chord together, and then how to add the minor seventh. Or a sixth, or a ninth, or a sus4 etc etc! As with the other sections, there's lots of examples and diagrams to help you on your way.

If you're just starting out on the keyboard, here's some info about what to look for when purchasing a 88 key keyboard, and also some insight into the different types of pedals that you may wish to purchase for your keyboard.
